They operate by focusing a high-powered laser beam onto the surface of the material, which either vaporizes, burns, or melts the material along the specified design. Makers can create intricate patterns, custom shapes, and detailed engravings by controlling the laser's power and speed. This makes laser cutters ideal for creating prototypes, customized products, art, and educational projects, fostering creativity and rapid iteration in a community-driven setting.

3D Printing with the Union College Maker Web

Come learn about 3D Printing and see 3D Printers in action! The Maker Web mostly uses Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) which is one of the most widely used 3D printing technologies, where a thermoplastic filament is heated to its melting point and then extruded layer by layer to build a 3D object. The process involves the deposition of the melted material through a nozzle, which moves in a controlled pattern based on a digital design. As the material cools, it solidifies, and successive layers fuse together to create the final object. FDM is popular for its affordability, accessibility, and ability to produce functional prototypes, parts, and tools from a variety of plastic materials like PLA, ABS, and PETG.
