Make composite structures with low VOC materials

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Robert van de Walle

Home: California, United States

Composite structures are ubiquitous and typically require a significant investment before fabrication can begin. I demonstrate how to use foam, glue, kraft paper, and window screen (and other low VOC materials) to duplicate much of the formability and durability of fiberglass. Perfect for fabricating small boats, bike fairings, large art installations, giant robot puppets, teardrop trailers, and theater props, this technology is very well suited for school and community groups. I will teach good techniques for cutting foam, laying up skins, and designing the structure to be durable.

Shotwell entered the arena for the first time at Robogames 2023, weighing in at 1.9 kg and 14 inches tall, placing fourth in Kung-Fu and taking silver medal in weight lifting. Kung-fu involves 2 remote-controlled robots in a boxing ring throwing uppercuts, side kicks, blocks, and dodges. Shotwell utilizes a leg linkage which keeps the legs parallel to the ground, a waist rotation axis, and beefy 2000 mAh LiPo battery. Designed and built by Kris Magri, a former Make: Magazine intern, piloted by Matt Ebisu, avid robot builder and robotics grad student, and kept in motion by operations manager Patty W.

The Scion: A Hero In Motion

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Andrew Spielberg

Home: Massachusetts, United States

The Scion: A Hero In Motion is a superhero story that teaches science, targeted toward preteens, teens and young college students. Ray Gallagher (superhero alias “The Scion”) is a college science student with the power to manipulate the forces of nature — but only if he deeply understands them. If Ray understands gravity, he can jump extra high; if he understands heat and energy, he can manipulate fire. Through this mechanism, story and teaching are intertwined. The Scion covers topics in-depth in a pedagogical fashion, and concepts build upon each other and are revisited throughout the novel. It is The Magic Schoolbus for middle-grade, but with added emphasis on conceptual learning. We presented an earlier version online at Maker Faire: Capitol Hill. We hope you like the previews!
