The Brickmania Team builds the USS Vallejo (Pt 2) & Historic Mare Island Ship Yard

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Brickmania

Home: California, United States

During Maker Faire 2023, Brickmania's team of LEGO enthusiasts scratch built a 10-foot-long replica of the atomic submarine USS Vallejo, just yards from where the actual submarine was built during the height of the Cold War. Team Brickmania plan to return to the scene to not only finish where we left off, but also to build the actual shipyard and slipway where the actual submarine was built. Additions include complete detailing the interior spaces, including working lights, assembling the shipyard's slipway and cranes, and otherwise add the details that make our works "museum quality." The final model will be part of a full-time display at our location in historic downtown Vallejo for the public to enjoy seven days a week.

Waterlight Graffiti

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Antonin Fourneau

Home: France

Waterlight Graffiti is an interactive light art installation that allows people to draw or write with water. The main idea behind the project is to merge the ephemeral nature of graffiti with technology and sustainability. When water touches the surface of the panel, it completes an electrical circuit that lights up LEDs embedded within. The result is a temporary, glowing artwork that fades away as the water evaporates, leaving no permanent mark. This project not only encourages creative expression and public participation but also promotes environmental awareness by utilizing water as a harmless, renewable medium for street art. It transforms public spaces into dynamic art galleries where everyone can contribute, altering the way people interact with urban environments.

ETIPADO: Extremely Tall Image Processing And Display Object

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Grant Patterson

Home: California, United States

ETIPADO: Extremely Tall Image Processing And Display Object is a startling demonstration of the persistence-of-vision effect: Shake your head "no" at a strobing column of light and images appear out of nowhere. Interact with the work by making faces in the work's camera, while friends see you in the strip of LEDs in real time. What's happening? The LEDs display vertical slices of images in fast succession. As your eye moves across the piece, the two-dimensional image “burns” into your retina, one column at a time. Sophisticated processing software takes real-time imagery from the attached digital camera and broadcasts them to the LEDs. ETIPADO is unexpected art: It’s easy to walk by and not notice it. Once discovered, participants are inspired to share the “secret” with those around them.

Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser Extravaganza

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Eepybird ("the Diet Coke and Mentos Guys")

Home: New Jersey, United States

We set up 102 bottles of Diet Coke (or similar soda) with custom designed, handmade nozzle screwed to the top of each bottle. Each nozzle holds 6 Mentos candies held in by a pin. When that pin is pulled the Mentos fall and shoot a geyser 20' in the air. We set off the bottles in a choreographed fountain show inspired by the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas. The original video of the show won the very first Webby Award for Viral Video. Here's more at our website: https://www.eepybird.com/experiments/cokementos/. We always make a point of explaining the science behind it all, and teach the audience how to make their own geyers at home and even how to make our custom nozzles. The show is a LOT of fun, for both the audience and for us. We love Maker Faire.
