C-Eyes

Faire: Rome

Maker: IT Archimede

C-Eyes is an innovative assistive technology designed to empower visually impaired individuals. Through the use of artificial intelligence and computer vision, C-Eyes captures real-time images and converts them into detailed audio descriptions, essentially enabling users to 'see' through hearing. Our device comes in two models. The 'Pro' model integrates a personal AI assistant powered by OpenAI GPT-4, providing advanced functionality and interactive voice recognition. The 'Lite' model, an economical and lightweight alternative, focuses on core functions of scene recognition and audio synthesis. Both models serve our mission to enhance independence, safety, and quality of life for visually impaired individuals. C-Eyes demonstrates the transformative potential of AI technology in tackling societal challenges and promoting inclusivity.

Ago Intelligente per la Diagnosi del Tumore della Prostata

Faire: Rome

Maker: Università degli Studi del Sannio - Benevento

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the male population and represents about 20% of all cancers diagnosed in men. Estimates in Italy speak of around 35,000 new cases a year, but the risk of the disease having an unfortunate outcome is low, especially if intervention is made in the initial stages. The system that we intend to present at Maker Faire Rome 2023, developed as part of the project 'BARTOLO - Sviluppo ed applicazione di nuove tecnologie robotiche per la diagnosi bioptica del tumore prostatico’ finanziato dalla Regione Campania (POR CAMPANIA FESR 2014/2020), consists in a miniaturized probe, based on optical fiber technology and integrated inside a medical needle, capable of measuring the elastic consistency of biological tissues with high spatial resolution (the fiber sensor in fact has a diameter of less than a millimetre), for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

ANTIBACTERIAL TABLEWARE

Faire: Rome

Maker: Ceramiche NOI S.c.a.r.l.

The "Antibacterial Plate" project stems from an important Research & Development phase that the company has already undertaken since 2020 during the pandemic. We wondered what could be needed in such a moment and what it could cope with in a market like ours to a pandemic but also to an improvement of catering and private environments. This is how the research and first prototyping phase of this project began, which saw the filing of a patent for a particular object which, due to its particularity, can reject up to 99% of the bacteria that deposit on it can be bacteria of various types and by imagining the various "passages" of dishes, for example in a restaurant or self-service restaurant or naval restaurant halls, we hypothesized that these objects could have an enormous plus compared to other identical but not antibacterial objects. We have therefore arrived at the laboratory certification of products both in single color and with antibacterial decorations and decals with a characteristic that resists the microwave oven and dishwasher for the entire life of the product without ever failing up to at its breakup. This product is extremely innovative as it can be used in many areas, both private and public, to increase hygiene and above all to counteract the spread of bacteria in the kitchen and in refreshment areas without considering that being reusable after washing it is also highly environmental impact and reduces the use of "single portions" which are extremely polluting today.

Clients & problems: Healthcare professionals and students. Busy schedules, statistical illiteracy and information saturation make it difficult for them to stay up-to-date. “In the biomedical field alone, more than 1 million articles pour into the PubMed database each year […]” (Nature). The problems are known, but hard to quantify in net terms. Our clients difficulties lies in that periodic and in-depth professional updating activity is a work in itself. Sacrificing patient hours for studying is sometimes not possible. Among the most unpleasant consequences, the discovery that a patient has been treated with an outdated therapy. Such an eventuality would be preferable not to be turned turn into a "necessary evil", a painful trade-off between the number of patients who require treatment and the quality of the treatment that can be administered. In addition to the suffering on a strictly human level, another problem that is becoming more acute is that of lawsuits for "malpractice". Growing, they discourage doctors from riskier practices for patients, as well as young people from embarking on a medical career. Our solution: it can be described as a search engine which, because of an AI algorithm, is able to: - Search for scientific articles related to a specific query and summarize their content; - Classify the results on the basis of various parameters (e.g. methodological value, citations, impact factor), assigning them a qualitative value, thus identifying the most solid research; - Aggregate the results based on the aforementioned parameters; - Produce an output that can be consulted quickly, listing the sources on which the analysis was conducted to draw up an effective overview on which to plan an update; - Assisting researcher in scientific writing & data production; - Automatic meta-analysis. Innovation: First, we will move away from the DSS (Decision Support System) approach of our main competitor, Uptodate.com, to embrace a full AI paradigm. Then, we will find a niche in the scientific publication sector, by creating a set of tool for many scientists willing to publish high quality research. By doing to, our analytic efficiency will further increase. We already have a registered trademark and an industrial patent.

Sedia a rotelle elettrica per tetraplegici

Faire: Rome

Maker: IIS Tito Sarrocchi

In the 2022-2023 school year, the students of class IV and V of the Electronic Robotics specialization allowed tetraplegic people, i.e., person with inability to voluntarily move the upper and lower parts of the body, to move independently and using the residual mobility of the head. An Arduino NANO 33 BLE and an inertial sensor present on board allow to intercept the movements of the head and, through the Bluetooth module, the information of the head movements is delivered to a self-built Master board and subsequently, through the DAC, the voltages are created to run the engines. Moreover, a set of sensors on the perimeter of the wheelchair avoids obstacles and a LIDAR sensor helps reconstruct the surrounding environment.

Approcci di Machine Learning per la classificazione di immagini dermoscopiche

Faire: Rome

Maker: Sapienza Università di Roma

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world with a high mortality rate. Early identification and diagnosis of skin lesions is essential to determine the best treatment for the patient and to increase the survival rate in the case of cancerous lesions. Diagnosis of this disease is conducted manually by more or less experienced dermatologists, but it proves to be time consuming and difficult. Machine-learning and deep-learning approaches have been developed to overcome these issues and support dermatologists, in order to make this procedure much easier, faster, and more accurate.

Massage On a Bottle

Faire: Rome

Maker: Massage on a Bottle

Can a plastic bottle be useful in a different way and teach us something before being recycled? In our opinion yes! In this project we use a plastic bottle of mineral water to simulate the resistance that the abdomen of the human body opposes during compressions in emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (ETC). For the training of people in this type of maneuvers, are generally used specialized dummies that, while reproducing in an exact manner the human anatomy, are on the other hand very expensive, limiting in fact the number of people who can try at least once the experience of simulation. This idea was born from the observations of one of the two members of the project team (Luigi) who has been working for many years as a volunteer and is engaged as a trainer for resuscitation maneuvers in emergency. In order to make this kind of experience accessible to anyone, from the collaboration with the other team member (Pierluigi, Electronic Technician and Maker), this project was developed on two different levels: the first, conceived to be extremely simple, which in addition to the bottle uses a small mechanical device capable of rendering both visual and sound feedback when the right level of compression is reached. the second, which integrates the first, with a Smartphone app capable of detecting from the device the rhythm of the compressions performed and confirming the correct execution of the maneuver. The app, moreover, provides useful indications on how to perform the operations and allows to share the experience and spread the use of the device and the app. All this is done both in a training setting and in complete autonomy. This project aims to increase as much as possible the number of people who, at least once in their lives, have tried the practice of external chest compressions for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In this way, in fact, it increases the number of individuals potentially able to save a life. From the moment a person goes into cardiac arrest, the time available to intervene is very limited and spread the culture of how to perform a maneuver of this type can, in some cases, make the difference between life and death. Our presence at the fair will allow us to have visitors try out external chest compression maneuvers, effectively creating a training environment.
